PageIndex is a retrieval engine for long, complex professional documents that replaces vector similarity search with a hierarchical tree index. It first generates a tree structure for each document, then lets an LLM reason its way through that tree to find the relevant sections, much like a human expert turning to the right chapter of a report. Because it needs no vector database and no chunking, results are traceable to explicit page and section references. It ships as an open-source SDK with a local mode that runs on your own LLM key, plus a hosted cloud, an MCP server and an API. It targets financial reports, legal documents, regulatory filings, technical manuals and academic textbooks.

PageIndex works by combining Vectorless Tree Indexing: Builds a hierarchical table-of-contents-style tree for each document so retrieval needs no vector database and no embeddings., Reasoning-Based Retrieval: An LLM searches the tree agentically to find relevant sections, surfacing content that is relevant but not semantically similar., No Chunking: Preserves natural document structure instead of splitting text into arbitrary chunks, keeping full context intact., Traceable Results: Every answer points back to explicit page and section references, making retrieval explainable and auditable., Local SDK Mode: Index, retrieve and chat entirely on your machine with your own LLM key, or point the same client at PageIndex Cloud with an API key. to help users with Financial Report Analysis: Answering detailed questions over long annual reports and filings with page-level citations., Legal Document Review: Locating clauses and cross-references in contracts and regulatory filings., Technical Manual Q&A: Querying large product manuals and specifications for exact procedures., Academic Textbook Study: Indexing textbooks of 1,000+ pages once and asking follow-up questions cheaply., Agent Document Tools: Giving AI agents a reasoning-based document retrieval tool via MCP or SDK..
